IN MEMORIAM

fl-bernard-peck-obituary-20151016Bernard J. Peck 1927-2015

Bernard “Bernie” Peck was born on March 24, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended St. John’s Military Academy and served honorably in the United States Army until the end of WWII. He started in the family business, Peck Meat Packing Corporation, in 1947 while also attending college at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. In addition to running a successful business for more than 40 years, Bernie was one of Milwaukee’s leading philanthropists. Through the Peck Foundation, Bernie and his family contributed to the Peck Welcome Center at the Milwaukee County Zoo, the Peck Pavilion at the Marcus Center, the Peck Aquatic Center at the Jewish Community Center, and the Peck Chapel at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun. In 1992, the Broward Performing Arts Foundation surpassed its multi-million fundraising goal after the Miriam and Bernard Peck Foundation and the Milton and Lillian Peck Foundation put the center over the top with a $500,000 gift. Bernie served on numerous nonprofit boards of directors including: The Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County, The Rotary Club of Milwaukee, Second Harvest of Wisconsin, The Zoological Society of Milwaukee, The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, and The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. For years, Bernie generously funded the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward’s anti-bullying initiatives. Today, the Peck Foundation continues Bernie’s legacy by funding the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward Bernard J. Peck Anti-Bullying Fund.
